AMANDA Wan Mun Yi, KDU College Class of 2009 Valedictorian, recently became the first Malaysian female and the only other woman to compete at the Diageo Reserve World Class Finals 2010 in Athens, Greece.

The year-long global challenge saw 9,000 bartenders from around the globe shaking, stirring and pouring their way through the national heats.

Only the top 24 of the most talented and inspirational bartenders remained to go head-to-head over four days of six individual challenges.

As one of the finalists in a world-class competition that is dominated by men, Wan sprang a surprise when she upstaged many at the national heats to represent Malaysia. She may not have been selected to enter a beauty pageant despite her winning smile, charm and versatility, but she turned many heads when she wowed the judges in the World Class Finals with one of her unique presentations in the Ritual and Theatre of Drinks Challenge.

Reigning in her artistic talent through chocolate calligraphy for her presentation of the 23-year-old Ron Zacapa rum together with her grandmother’s recipe of an unbeatable vintage alcoholic fruitcake for the challenge, she then tapped into her Oriental roots using a Chinese elixir and Johnnie Walker Blue Label to create a cocktail named The Temple of Gold.
